- And Now for Something Completely Different...
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 - To the point so many make about 'no good music being made today' (which if you'll recall, I completely disagree with), and for a little bit of fun (I hope) I've got a handful of hints here at which band this is about plus some news from our friends at rollingstone.com on the new album (yet unreleased) from the band in question.
Hint:
1. They are not classified as 'Classic Rock'
2. Their music has all the elements of classic rock
3. They are British.
4. They're one of my favourite bands of this decade.
5. This will be their 5th album.Recent quote from their singer:
"I heard a Bono quote once that said 'Bands shouldn't break up over money, they should break up over track listing,' " he says. "Nothing could be more pertinent at this point."To record their fourth album, the band hired legendary producer Brian Eno and pointedly tried to remove all outside influences. (Eno has long co-produced U2 and worked extensively with Bowie, Eno was once a member of Roxy Music)
Several tracks are considerably rougher around the edges, with distorted guitars and more prominent percussion. The lyrics are darker, dealing with recurring themes of death and loneliness. (death and loneliness, hmmmm, can you say "Dark Side of the Moon"?!)
"42": The fact that the band is considering this song as the album's first real single underlines how far they're willing to a stray from their formula: It's an elaborate three-part piece, with swirling pianos, strings and beat loops that build to an uptempo climax, with some seriously stoner lyrics: "Those who are dead are not dead/They're just living in my head." (I'm reminded of the Doors and Hendrix now)
"Death and All His Friends": A straight-up rock tune with a riff that sounds ripped from the Doobie Brothers, piano, and, in the last section, flute. (mmmm, Doobies)
Who do you imagine this band is and does this blog make you wanna hear the album or what???Cheers,

RE: And Now for Something Completely Different...
The "darker" lyrics with references to death and loneliness, and the "stoner"
lyrics have me thinking Radiohead. Right or wrong, they are probably my favourite non-classic rock band. Whoever it is though, it does sound intriguing.

Based on your clues Jeff, I thought it might be Coldplay, so I looked it up. Unless I read this incorrectly, the upcoming album with Brian Eno will be their fourth. Nevertheless, if you do manage to lay your hands on an audio sample or two, put them up on the blog for us Old Time Rock and Roll listeners. On a related note, If you caught the original version of Rock Star when INXS was looking for a frontman, the music of Coldplay was featured rather prominently. Since I'm here anyway, while the second version played itself out, did anybody really believe that Tommy Lee and Jason Newstead had any hope whatsoever of forming a supergroup with Gilbey Clarke?
